The Madera Winds will heat things up with a concert of “summer music” on Sunday, Jan. 11, from 4 to 5, at Wilton Library, 137 Old Ridgefield Road.
Connecticut musicians all, the woodwind quintet will present “Summer in Winter,” music composed and performed to evoke a gentler season.
The center piece of the concert will, indeed, be “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber. The musicians also will present “Sea Shanties,” a jazzy version of the songs of sailors by Malcolm Arnold.
Also on the program is “Mississippi Five.” This work, written by Englishman Jim Parker, is all about the jazz/riverboat culture of New Orleans in the 1920s. It pays homage to such jazz legends as King Oliver (cornet), Johnny Dodds (clarinet), and Bessie Smith (blues singer). A John Philip Sousa march rounds out the program.
Members of Madera Winds includes Ralph Kirmser of Wilton on oboe, Janet Atherton of Norwalk on clarinet, Cider Mill teacher Rosemary Dellinger on bassoon, John Harley on horn, and Jan van den Berg, a native of The Netherlands, on flute.
The Connecticut Concert series is free. Registration is highly recommended. Call 203-762-3950, ext. 213 or visit wiltonlibrary.org and click on Events.
