Blood drive at hospital on Friday, at library on Monday

Norwalk Hospital will host a community blood drive to benefit patients in hospitals on Friday, Dec. 18, from 1:30 to 6:15 in the patio room on the fifth floor of the hospital on Maple Street.

A Red Cross blood drive will take place on Monday, Dec. 21, from 1 to 6:30 at the Wilton Library. Appointments are appreciated but walk-ins are welcome.

The Red Cross urges donors of all blood types to give blood or platelets to help prevent seasonal shortfalls often caused by busy holiday schedules, inclement weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu.

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. The Red Cross recommends drinking plenty of fluids on the day of donation, wearing comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up, eating iron-rich foods in the weeks prior to donation, and bringing a list of any medications taken along with a photo identification or blood donor card.

The actual donation takes only about 10 to 12 minutes; however, donors should allow one hour for registration, giving a confidential health history and partaking in refreshments after their donation.

Donors can now save time when giving blood or platelets by using RapidPass. RapidPass allows blood donors to complete the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online from the convenience of their own computer prior to arriving at the blood drive. Donors must complete RapidPass on the day of their donation or it will be invalid. RapidPass may reduce the time donors spend at blood drives by up to 15 minutes. Follow the instructions at
