Belly dancing for breast cancer survivors

Helen Goldenberg, an occupational therapist, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Breast Cancer Survival Center support group Tuesday, Oct. 14, 6 p.m., at Wilton Library. The group meets in the Children’s Conference Room on the first floor.

Ms. Goldenberg’s work revolves around helping people improve their balance, flexibility and strength due to stroke, surgery, and bone and/or muscle loss due to medications, aging or inactivity.

At the support group meeting, she will introduce belly dancing as a way to improve balance, strengthen legs, hips and abdomen, and regain flexibility

“Belly dancing seemed an excellent choice for our group as many of us are on aromatase inhibitors  which make us more vulnerable to bone loss and breaking a bone if we fall,” support group leader Nina Marino said. “Some of us have some leftover tightness from surgery or pain from chemotherapy, Tamoxifen or the aromatase inhibitors.”

Ms. Goldenberg will introduce tai chi as well.

Since this is a participatory event, participants should dress comfortably.
