Notre Dame-Fairfield has hired Bernie Brennan as its girls basketball coach.

“It is an honor and a privilege to take over as the girls basketball coach at a storied program like Notre Dame of Fairfield,” Brennan said in a press release. “I know I have some tough shoes to fill, but I have been preparing my entire career to lead a program like this. I’m looking forward to helping the student-athletes develop to be the best that they can be both academically and athletically.”

Brennan has been involved with multiple AAU organizations over the past 30 years and has coached both women’s and men’s basketball at the collegiate level.

Most recently, Brennan was the girls basketball coach at Guilford High School, a position he held since 2019.

Brennan also coaches at BattleCon, an AAU program run in part by former Notre Dame coach Maria Conlon.

Conlon stepped down as coach at Notre Dame earlier in the summer to take the head coaching job at Greens Farms Academy.

Under Conlon, the Lancers won three SWC titles and the CIAC Class L championship last season.

Conlon said when she left that she would aid Notre Dame in the search for her replacement.

Notre Dame Athletic Director John Johnson said in a press release: “After a competitive search, Brennan distinguished himself as not only a coach highly proficient in basketball strategies, but a coach who puts character and culture first amongst his players.”

Among his 30 years coaching basketball, Brennan coached the girls basketball team at Bloomfield, where he coached Nykesha Sales, who went on to become a star at both UConn and in the WNBA.

Brennan also served as the girls basketball coach at East Haven from 1990-95 alongside his wife, Cindy, where he was named the New Haven Register Girls Basketball Coach of the Year in the 1994-95 season.

A 1975 graduate of Hamden High, Brennan coaches basketball year-round, working as the assistant director for the Connecticut Cobras AAU program before BattleCon.
