GameTimeCT Top 10 Girls Basketball Poll (Jan. 11): No. 1 Hamden, SCC maintain dominance atop rankings

SHA-Hand, Hamden-Mercy headline another strong week of league matchups.

The Southern Connecticut Conference continues to dominate the state's girls basketball conversation in 2023. For the second-consecutive week, the conference held four of the state's top 5 rankings, even after a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showcase game.

Hamden's 51-48 victory over No. 2 Hand last week makes the Green Dragons a unanimous hold on No. 1 in the latest GameTimeCT Top 10 Girls Basketball Poll heading into this weekend's games. Hand's performance was impressive enough for voters to keep the Tigers in the No. 2 spot.

Mercy-Middletown, whose only loss to date was 53-50 to Hand last week, defeated Sacred Heart Academy and swapped spots with the Sharks at Nos. 3 and 5, respectively.

The league's run of big matchups continues when Hand plays host to SHA Wednesday night and Mercy welcomes no. 1 Hamden to Middletown on Friday.

Unbeaten Ludlowe, out of the FCIAC, at last breaks up the SCC's run at No. 4.

Elsewhere, New London (ECC) lost a pair of games but managed to stay in the poll at No. 9, while unbeaten ECC rival Bacon Academy surged to No. 7.

Holy Cross, the only NVL representative, moved up a spot to No. 6. Simsbury replaced E.O. Smith as the CCC's only representative at No. 8.

Notre Dame-Fairfield, on a four-game losing streak, dropped out of the poll. Thanks to a 51-32 win over the Lancers, Immaculate hung on to the No. 10 spot and maintained an SWC representation despite a 52-46 loss to Brookfield.

Hamden, Ludlowe, Bacon Academy and Northwestern (Berkshire) are the only unbeaten teams in the state as we close in on the midway point of the season.
