The GameTimeCT Top 10 Football Poll (Week 2): For first time since 2013, Darien drops out; St. Joseph leaps back in; Greenwich still No. 1

St. Joseph QB Will Singewald (10) releases a pass during football action against Darien in Trumbull, Conn., on Saturday September 10, 2022. The Hogs moved from unranked to No. 9, while Darien dropped from No. 2 to unranked for the first time since Dec. 2, 2013.

Voters ranking CIAC football teams for the preseason GameTimeCT Top 10 Poll mostly admitted it was a tough sort-out.

This week? “This might be harder than my preseason poll,” one said.

Windsor lost. Trumbull won a track meet. Shelton won surprisingly big. New Canaan, without some key players, looked like New Canaan of old.

But the big news was that Darien, highly regarded in the preseason, got shut out at St. Joseph, which was said to be down. Not only was it the first time St. Joseph had defeated the Blue Wave since 2013, it also dropped Darien out of Top 10 for the first time since the post-Thanksigiving poll that same year.

In other words: This was a seismic shakeup in Week 1.

OK, folks, sort ‘em:

No. 1 for the second week in a row was Greenwich, this time two shy of unanimously, after a win at Newtown to open the year. New Canaan replaced Thanksgiving-rival Darien at No. 2, with Shelton jumping five spots to No. 3.

Killingly, which received one first-place vote for the second week in a row, and Maloney moved up two spots each to Nos. 4 and 5 after easy wins. At No. 6 is Fairfield Prep, down three spots after a one-point home loss to Florida’s Belen Jesuit Prep.

Southington jumped three spots to seventh after a good win over Newington. Then came No. 8 Trumbull, up a spot after a final-seconds win over Masuk.

Entering the poll are No. 9 St. Joseph – who received the other first-place vote -- and No. 10 Ansonia. The Hogs scored two late touchdowns to break a scoreless tie against Darien. Ansonia won handily and moved up a spot from last week.

Darien and Windsor, which lost to Wethersfield by a point after going for two and the win late, fell out of the top 10, Windsor further than Darien.
