LeFevre has been hired as just the fourth coach of the Cheshire baseball team since 1970, taking over for Mike Lussier who stepped down earlier this month.
Burt Leventhal coached from 1970-1997; his assistant coach, Bill Mrowka, took over from 1998-2018 and Mrowka and Leventhal’s assistant Lussier ran things from 2019-2022.
Now LeFevre, who was Lussier’s JV coach for one season and assistant coach for a season, is the next link in the short coaching chain for the Rams.
“When I first started coaching with coach Lussier I told him I wanted to one day be the head coach. I didn’t expect it to happen this fast but I am excited for the opportunity,” LeFevre said. “It has been a very positive last few years at Cheshire and I want to continue what those guys before me built here. They are great guys and great coaches and this is a great job to have.”
He said he learned many valuable lessons from Lussier in two years, mainly how to be cool under pressure.
“Lussier was so good at managing his emotions. He was always 72 and sunny,” LeFevre said. “I run hotter than Lussier and he helped me learn how to manage my emotions. He also taught me how to build lasting relationships with the kids. He was a great person to learn from. There is a strong coaching tree here and I want to live up to their standards.”
LeFevre was a captain and two-time All-CCC player at E.O. Smith where he graduated in 2012 before heading to play in college at Avery Point and then UConn.
He was also an All-CCC ice hockey player at E.O.
He played two seasons at Avery Point, leading them to the Junior College World Series in 2013.
At UConn he was a catcher and designated hitter and played one summer for the Chatham Anglers in the Cape Cod League and the Mystic Schooners in the NECBL
LeFevre coached several AAU teams before moving to Cheshire and contacting old UConn teammates who were from Cheshire to help him get in touch with Lussier. He joined the Rams’ staff in 2021.
"Alex is a great fit to lead the CHS baseball program,” Cheshire athletic director Steve Trifone said. “He knows our student-athletes, is knowledgeable of the sport of baseball and has worked well with everyone involved in the program. He is committed to continuing the success of the team."
LeFevre said he wants to continue the family atmosphere at Cheshire.
“The biggest part of coaching kids is making sure good relationships are permanent,” LeFevre said. “I don’t just want to know the varsity players well but the JV and freshmen players too because someday they could be varsity players. Building relationships early is key and a priority for me.”
