WINSTED — Fred Camp paced the Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic football co-op with three touchdowns while the Yellowjackets ran over, through and around Windsor Locks/Suffield/East Granby 39-14 for their second straight win at Van Why Field Saturday afternoon.

In a season with few seasoned players following last year’s COVID gap, “We’re improving every week,” said G/N/H coach Scott Salius after the Yellowjackets evened their record at 2-2.

“If we played like this in our first week, (Stafford/East Windsor/Somers in a 35-30 loss) wouldn’t be in the game with us.”

“Our best offense is our running game,” said quarterback Greyson Ursone, proving his point with a 37-yard third-quarter scoring sprint after spotting a wide-open gap in the Raider defense.

“My improvement is better connection with our center,” he said.

“Greyson worked on his own with hard counts in our practices, staggering them so our line wouldn’t jump offsides,” said Coach Salius. “We didn’t have a single offside penalty on offense today.”

“We’re hitting our holes quicker, so we just need a little bit of a gap,” said Camp, reeling off scoring runs of eight and 23 yards from the line of scrimmage and his third touchdown on a 70-yard punt return.

Fullback Aiden Avenia found one of the gaps for a 56-yard first-quarter scoring run in the first quarter, joining Camp’s eight-yard score for a 13-0 lead.

Camp sprang his 23-yard sprint in the second period for a 20-8 lead at the half.

Still, after being shut out in in the Raiders’ only two previous games, Windsor Locks coach Jason Qua found solace in bright spots of his own when his team battled back from deep holes consistently dug for them by G/N/H kicker Austin Bayer’s booming kickoffs and punts.

“Our quarterback (Aiden Walker) has the heart of a lion and (bruising runner Justin Morie) is the only freshman I’ve ever started in seven years as the Raider coach,” Qua said.

Walker and senior receiver Troy Artis lit the match on a 69-yard yard scoring bomb as the first half drew to a close, Walker connecting again for a two-point conversion pass to Kieman Rudzik.

The Walker/Artis connection produced four more completions for 128 aerial yards, including a final 10-yard scoring pass with 46 seconds left in the game, while freshman Morie banged his way to 90 yards on the ground in 16 carries.

But most of the time, the G/N/H defense was up to the task and Yellowjacket runners far outnumbered Morie on offense.

Nolan Risedorf carried the final yard for a G/N/H touchdown drive in the third quarter; Ursone burst through for his long score making it 33-8 going into the fourth; and Camp put it away for good with his punt return five minutes before the end of the game, regardless of the final Walker/Artis scoring connection.

“Our passing game isn’t where we need it to be; we’ve got to improve it,” said Coach Salius.

Meanwhile, no opposing team looks forward to seeing the Yellowjackets run — and the passing game is likely to get better every week.
