CIAC volleyball top performances and games to watch


Skyleen Busanet, Windham: Busanet had 64 digs in two matches as Windham lost to Montville 3-1 on Sept. 17, and defeated Windham Tech 3-0 on Sept. 24. She totaled 34 and 30 digs respectively.

Grace Downing, Cheshire: Downing had 31 assists as the Rams downed SCC rival Guilford in four sets on Monday. She added three aces and five digs in the win.

MacKenzie Grady, Lyman Hall: The Trojans’ senior co-captain had 23 kills, 14 digs, and six aces to highlight a 3-1 victory over Shelton on Friday. She added 14 kills, seven aces and six digs during a 3-0 win over Wilbur Cross on Monday.

Jamye Iodice, Stratford: The senior racked up 24 digs and added a pair of aces in Stratford’s 3-0 win over town rival Bunnell on Friday.

Abby Jones, Bristol Eastern: Jones, a senior, collected 33 assists and four aces to help lead the Lancers to a 3-0 win over New Britain on Sept. 22. She had 28 assists in Monday’s 3-0 win against Platt. She’s had 25 or more assists in three consecutive matches.

Halle Krause, Guilford: The Grizzlies junior dished out 23 assists and had five digs in a 3-0 win over West Haven on Friday.

Avery Mola, Cheshire: Mola had a game-best 17 kills as Cheshire defeated Guilford 3-1 on Monday. She also had three aces and three digs.

Nyssa Park, Conard: The senior had 30 assists, five digs and five aces to help lead Conard to a 3-0 shutout of Farmington on Monday. She also had 18 assists, 10 aces and seven digs in a 3-0 win over Berlin on Sept. 22.

Jocelyn Powers, Avon: The junior setter had 29 assists, 24 digs, and three aces in a four-set victory over East Catholic on Sept. 22. She added 23 assists, eight digs, and five aces when the Falcons defeated Hall on Monday.

Alex Rivera, Bristol Central: The sophomore racked up 30 assists, seven digs and six aces in the Rams’ five-set win over Maloney on Monday.

Camdyn Roth, Trumbull: The junior outside hitter had 11 kills, 11 digs and a pair of blocks as the Eagles blanked Westhill 3-0 in a rematch of the 2019 Class LL final on Monday.

Jessica Timothy, Haddam-Killingworth: Timothy, a senior, collected 19 kills, three aces, and two digs in a 3-1 win over East Hampton on Friday. She has 110 kills in the first seven matches, hitting double digits six times, including 26 in a five-set win over North Branford on Sept. 13.

Shakira Villaneueva, Lyman Hall: The senior setter had 36 assists and added four digs, three aces and one block in a 3-1 win over Shelton last Friday. She has 197 assists in the Trojans’ first seven matches.

Hannah Weber, Bristol Eastern: The senior did a bit of everything with 24 kills, six digs, two aces, and one block when the Lancers shut out New Britain on Sept. 22. She followed up with 20 kills in a shutout of Platt on Monday. For the season, Weber has 117 kills in eight matches and the Lancers are 7-1.

Haley Weiner, Southington: Weiner, a junior, collected 49 assists in Southington’s five-set loss to Farmington on Sept. 22. It was her third consecutive match with at least 40 assists. She had 40 in a 3-1 win over Simsbury on Sept. 20, and 42 in a 3-2 loss to Conard on Sept. 17.


Greenwich at Ludlowe, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.: The FCIAC opened its official conference schedule this week and right off the bat, there’s a match between two ranked and undefeated teams: No. 1 Greenwich (6-0) and No. 7 Ludlowe (5-0). The Cardinals have an 18-game winning streak dating back to the start of last year.

Staples at New Canaan, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.: New Canaan has gotten off to a hot start with four wins in its first five matches, including a five-set thriller over SWC power Joel Barlow. Staples figures to be in the hunt for a conference playoff berth, but has struggled so far with a 1-4 record.

Cheshire at Amity, Friday, 5:30 p.m.: No. 2 Cheshire is 8-0 and has not dropped a set. No. 6 Amity is 7-0 with four shutouts and a trio of 3-1 wins. This early season SCC showdown is the first of two meetings between the teams this fall.

Newtown at Pomperaug, Friday, 6:30 p.m.: Newtown came out of the gates with four losses, but has bounced back of late, winning its last two. Pomperaug, meanwhile, was on a 5-0 run before losing to Weston in five sets last Friday.

Trumbull at Darien, Saturday, 2 p.m.: Two traditional FCIAC powers in a weekend battle. Darien is 4-0 and is ranked No. 3, while Trumbull is 4-1 with its only loss coming to top-ranked Greenwich.

South Windsor at RHAM, Monday, 6 p.m.: The second meeting in eight days between the two teams. Defending CCC champion RHAM won Monday’s clash 3-1, extending its win streak to five. South Windsor, which is 5-2, will look to get even here.

Bristol Eastern at Bristol Central, Monday, 6:30 p.m.: Bristol Eastern graduated a terrific class of seniors, but has looked strong again this season, winning seven straight since a season-opening loss to South Windsor. Town rival Bristol Central, which is 6-2, will look to end the Lancers’ run.

Darien at Ludlowe, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.: The Falcons take on a second-ranked FCIAC team this week when they host the No. 3 Blue Wave on Monday. Darien is off to a 4-0 start and hasn’t dropped a set.
