Paul Morigi / Getty ImagesCelebrity lifestyle guru and former Connecticut resident Martha Stewart and Los Angeles Charger lineman Morgan Fox celebrated wins by pups competing for top dog in the 146th Westminster Dog Show in Tarrytown, N.Y. While the competition usually takes place in Madison Square Garden, it was moved to nearby Westchester County in 2021.
Stewart, who previously resided in Westport, celebrated the Non-Sporting Group Best of Breed win of a seven-year-old Chow Chow named Buddakan. She told People Magazine that Buddakan is the son of her late dog, Genghis Khan, who won Best of Breed during a show in 2012; it was also the child of another winner named Maddox.
"Non-sporting breeds were judged including the Chow Chows! Buddakan won. He is the son of my winner Ghenghis Khan, and Ghenghis was the son of winner Maddox. Three generations of Chow Chows I am so proud," Stewart wrote on Instagram.
The Westminster Dog Show, which claims to be "the world’s greatest dog show," gives canine contestants a chance to compete in various categories including herding, agility, obedience and breeds. Over 3,000 dogs entered this year, according to the Associated Press.
Stewart wasn't the only celebrity to have a dog competing among the more than 3,000 participants. French bulldog Winston, which is co-owned by the Los Angeles Chargers' Fox, won the Reserve Best in Show. Winston was runner-up for the grand prize of Best in Show, which was won by a bloodhound named Trumpet. Earlier in the competition, Winston was also named Best of the Non-Sporting Group. The Non-Sporting Group includes dog breeds like bulldogs, Chow Chows, Dalmatians and Bichon Frises, according to the American Kennel Club.
The NFL player shared reactions to his puppy's win on Twitter, and told the Associated Press Winston was "basically a superstar" and a "winner in both appearance and character."
"If this is how my parents felt watching my games all these years, I apologize," MorganFox wrote on Twitter. "Apparently I should be training with him."
The athlete received the puppy from his grandmother, Sandy Fox, who is a breeder of French bulldogs, the Associated Press reported.
This is not the first time dogs owned by professional athletes have competed in the competition. New York Yankees stars Lou Gehrig and Mike Mussina entered a German shepherd and an Irish setter respectively in previous years, according to the Associated Press.
