Editorial: Shop at home
Well, not exactly. We’re not talking about surfing the Web and shopping from your sofa.
We’re talking about heading into Wilton Center or cruising along Route 7 and shopping in your hometown. Everyone wants a vibrant town with places to go and things to do. But we can’t have that unless we support it. That means shopping within the 06897 ZIP code. UPS and FedEx will do just fine making fewer stops in Wilton to deliver those packages with the goofy Amazon smile on them.
This weekend offers a perfect opportunity to get started. Friday evening is Wilton’s Winter and Holiday Stroll, when retailers, restaurants and other businesses keep their doors open to welcome “strollers” in for a bit of hospitality and shopping. Knowing that it’s not always easy to shop during the Stroll, those who come downtown Friday can pick up a certificate from the Chamber of Commerce to receive holiday shopping specials throughout the weekend from participating businesses. Don’t know what to get someone local? The Chamber sells gift certificates redeemable at its members.
Wilton has a lovely downtown, free of the congestion of some of its neighbors, and free and plentiful parking. Businesses along the Route 7 corridor are also easily accessed. Shopping in your hometown allows you to get some fresh air as you cross items off your list. Maybe enjoy a bite to eat and be home in short order.
So enjoy the music, the marshmallows, and the kids’ faces when they sit on Santa’s lap Friday evening, and then come back.
Before you head north or south to those shopping behemoths where you have to park a mile away and wait on long lines — or order something online only to find out it doesn’t look anything like the picture — check out what’s in your own backyard. You might just be surprised at what you find, and you’ll be spreading some holiday cheer to your neighbors.
