Whether you are in a store, at the gym, out and about in town, or on the road, this is one of the busiest times of the year. And probably the time we are most distracted.
Add a little holiday celebrating to that and maybe some bad weather and the results can be devastating.
Holiday parties are getting into full swing about now, and whether it is a house party, an office gathering, or just a convivial get-together at a restaurant, please make it a safe ride home. Please use a designated driver, a taxi, a ride-sharing service, or public transportation if you’ve been celebrating with alcohol.
As dangerous as drunk driving is distracted driving. Connecticut’s laws are clear: hands-free devices only and no one under 18 may use any device, hands-free or not, while driving. In addition, distracted driving encompasses any activity that takes your eyes off the road, takes your hands off the wheel or interrupts your concentration while driving. Engaging in distracted driving substantially increases the risk of crashing into someone or something.
So keep your phone in your pocket or purse while driving, and don’t eat, try to read, or do any of the many other things people do when all they should be doing is driving. Wait until you park to ask if there’s anything else you should pick up at the store. Wait until you park to make social plans. Wait until you park to talk to your children.
Drunk driving and distracted driving are 100% preventable. That means the misery they cause is 100% preventable. Sometimes accidents don’t just happen. Sometimes we help them along. Don’t be someone who does this.
As you go about your errands, and as you gather with friends and family this holiday season to reminisce about the past year and look forward to the future, please remember to keep our roads safe for yourself, for your family and friends, and for the rest of us.
