A Wilton resident for two decades, Jim Murphy of Edgewater Drive has dedicated more than 17 years of his life to perfecting what he calls “a more intuitive way of teaching.” After getting an undergraduate degree in engineering physics at Princeton University and a master’s degree in electrical engineering concentrating in semiconductor physics at Stanford University, Mr. Murphy found himself working for Phillips Research Laboratories in Silicon Valley as a research engineer. There, among other things, he developed enhanced integrated circuit models for a simulation program called “ESPICE,” which models monetary flow in economic analysis. After three years, Mr. Murphy scored a position at investment firm Goldman Sachs as a strategist, where he developed a computer-based options trading system, which included a risk analysis program and a quoting program. Between 1982 and 2006, Mr. Murphy was vice president of Solomon Brothers-Phibro Energy Division in Greenwich and president of Commsoft Inc. in Wilton. However, Mr. Murphy’s true calling was always teaching. “Anything that I ever did on Wall Street I never got a feeling of accomplishment from,” he said. “As a tutor, I’m taking students struggling with material and making a difference.” For the last 17 years, Mr. Murphy has tutored high school and college students in Fairfield County, and has done so exclusively since 2006 through his business, College Bound Tutoring. He has taught students in math and science courses ranging from high-school level statistics to SAT subject tests to college-level trigonometry courses. “I teach above and beyond what [my students] are doing in class,” said Mr. Murphy, “I always try to explain to them exactly how it works. It’s not all about the grades, it’s about understanding. I’m not happy when a student gets an A and knows the ‘how,’ I’m happy when a student get a B and can tell me the ‘why.’ This student could show me how to do it 10 years from now if I knocked on their door. That’s my goal.” Information: firstname.lastname@example.org, or 203-762-9081.
