A ribbon-cutting ceremony and silent auction to support the Alzheimer’s Association drew a sizable crowd to Brookdale Wilton on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 17.
As small plates, hors d’oeuvres and beverages were served, Brookdale residents Miriam Flanagan and James Kuhn cut the ribbon as local officials looked on. The ribbon-cutting celebrated Brookdale’s name change as part of its marketing strategy. It was formerly called Brookdale Place.
The celebration included Brookdale Wilton’s annual silent auction to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The auction raised $2,330, along with an additional $435 from direct contributions, raffle tickets and the sale of purple bracelets. The senior residence has raised approximately $3,365 and expects to come close to $3,500 by the day of the walk. These efforts were spearheaded by Christy Perone, Brookdale Wilton’s sales and marketing manager.
The Fairfield County Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 8:30 until 1 at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. The walk will step off at 10. So far, there are 183 teams and 800 walkers registered who have raised $135,776. Among the walkers on Oct. 4 will be a team from the Wilton Senior Center.
The walk “will be a day of hope to find a cure for Alzheimer’s,” said Leslie Hinshaw, director of volunteer development for the Alzheimer’s Association. She noted that 72,000 people in Connecticut have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s being cared for by 177,000 caregivers.
The money raised will be used for care, research and advocacy to find a cure, Hinshaw said.
