New waste contract approved

The Board of Selectmen voted Monday, May 19, to approve a new municipal waste disposal contract with a company called City Carting.

Before signing this contract, First Selectman Bill Brennan said the town was paying $103 per ton for municipal waste. Now, it will pay just $87.60 per ton.

In addition to a reduction in price, the town will also earn $5 more per ton of recycling delivered to the company.

These new terms, Mr. Brennan said, represent “a much better contract.”

“City Carting was selected for our carting company,” Mr. Brennan said. “We deliver our waste to them, and they handle it.”

The contract is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2014.

Mr. Brennan also said the town looked at surrounding communities’ municipal waste contracts in determining a new contract.

This review showed four of six towns in the immediate are use City Carting and have contracts similar to Wilton’s newest.
