Classes in wilderness safety

Outdoor Sports Center is now offering Wilderness Medical Education at its store on Danbury Road. These SOLO-inspired courses — required for Boy Scout leaders — teach valuable life-saving techniques to prevent injuries and emergencies out on the trail.

Three levels of courses are scheduled for November, with more planned for the future. Sign-up is by email to info@outdoorsports.com.

Building your First Aid Kit is a free class on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m.

Wildlife Safety is a free class on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m.

Wilderness First Aid will be offered Saturday, Nov. 14, and Sunday, Nov. 15, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost is $175. This is a two-day 16-hour course that covers basic skills of response and assessment, bandaging, environmental emergencies, splinting and basic medical emergency intervention such as asthma, heart attacks, anaphylaxis, etc. Meeting the ACA guidelines, participants will receive a SOLO WFA certification that is good for two years after this course.

Teaching these classes will be Christopher Broughton-Bossong, a SOLO-certified wilderness medical instructor, who specializes in wilderness first response, wilderness first aid, and backcountry search and rescue. He has spent the last two years teaching these courses full-time for SOLO. He is a firefighter/EMT, wilderness EMT, and swift water rescue tech who  has served on two backcountry search and rescue teams in Mt. Washington Valley.
