News Notes: Spring ahead

Well, spring is not quite here, but we turn our clocks ahead this weekend in anticipation of longer — and warmer, we hope — days. Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 9.

The Wilton Fire Department reminds us when we turn ahead our clocks remember to change the batteries in our smoke alarms, too. Smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector batteries need to be changed at least once a year. This simple act cuts the risk of dying in a home fire nearly in half. Also, be sure to test that smoke alarm at least once a month. Smoke alarms more than 10 years old should be replaced.

It’s hard to think about smoke and CO detectors until they are needed. Don’t wait and let the batteries die, risking disaster. Change the batteries when turning the clocks forward and rest easy night after night until fall.

These simple steps could save a life.
