Wilton Library has more than 140,000 items in its collection. There is a 24/7 reference service. There are local databases — such as the Wilton Business Directory — and scores of online databases. What gives you access? A library card.

That’s one powerful piece of plastic.

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month and Wilton Library is joining in by encouraging everyone to get a library card.

For four consecutive Saturdays beginning Sept. 8, Wilton Library staff members will be out in the community to sign up new patrons. They will also help replace lost cards or renew expired cards.

Look for them:

•Sept. 8, 10 to 1, at the Wilton Family Y;

•Sept. 15, 10:30 to 1:30, at the Village Market;

•Sept. 22, 10 to 1, at the library’s Tots to Teens Book Sale;

•Sept. 29, 10 to 1, at Stop & Shop.

And if you think you can’t get something for nothing, check this out. Everyone new to the library who turns in a card application will be given a coupon for a free DVD rental when they visit the library to pick up their new card.

Wilton Library patrons may use their card at any Connecticut public library. In turn, anyone with a card from a Connecticut public library — including employees of Wilton-based companies — may borrow materials from Wilton Library.

Your Wilton Library card could just be the most versatile card in your wallet. Don’t leave home without it!
