Wilton 10s fall in LL district title game

One day after suffering its first post-season loss, the Ridgefield Little League 9/10-year-old team made sure there would be no repeat.

Taking charge right away, Ridgefield beat Wilton, 15-5, to win the District 1 tournament Saturday night in Weston. The game was stopped after five innings due to the run rule.

Wilton had forced a deciding game in the double-elimination playoffs by edging Ridgefield, 11-10, in seven innings, in the first game of the finals Friday night in Stamford.

Saturday’s game was not nearly as tension-filled, as Ridgefield scored in its first three at-bats to open a 10-0 lead through three innings.

Matthew Bucciero sparked Ridgefield’s win with his bat and arm. Bucciero kept Wilton in check with a solid pitching performance and also sparkled at the plate with three hits, including a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs.

Twin brother Daniel Bucciero added two hits and three RBIs and also came on in relief for Ridgefield.

Joel Strand had a home run among his three hits and finished with three RBIs, while Grady Gernert, Aidan Bogursky and Will Hanna added two hits apiece.

Wilton got its runs on doubles from George DiRocco and Zarius Eusebe and a single from Matthew Tabet.

Notes: It was the fourth game — and third in the playoffs – between the teams. Ridgefield had beaten Wilton during pool play and in the winners’ bracket finals before losing in Friday night’s championship opener.

Ridgefield ended the District 1 tournament with a 7-1 record and outscored the opposition by a combined 94-33.

It was the first district title for a Ridgefield Little League team since 2007, when Ridgefield American won the 11/12-year-old championship.

Wilton went 7-3 in the tournament, with all three losses coming to Ridgefield.
