Wilton’s third grade boys lacrosse team won the ‘Gravy’ division championship at the 7th Annual Gobbler Games Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 19, at SUNY Purchase.
The team went 2-0 with wins over Ridgefield Orange (8-6) and Greenwich (12-6), before they faced (also undefeated) Ridgefield White in the championship game.
Wilton jumped all over Ridgefield early in the game behind the relentless riding of attackmen Mark Sylvester and Jimmy Dineen, who created multiple turnovers and turned them into easy goals.
Middies Kevin Macken and Mason Cilento were fantastic all day between the lines, and helped transfer the ball upfield to attackmen Wyatt Kreter and Porter Coutant. The Wilton defense was led by Declan Jackson and Cody Korpan, who helped the team protect a four-goal lead early on.
Ridgefield clawed its way back into the game before the half, behind an amazing effort by a Ridgefield middie, and led 5-4 at halftime.
Wilton came out after halftime determined to shut down Ridgefield’s best player and the teams traded goals deep into the second half before Dylan Flanagan tied the game for Wilton with less than two minutes to play.
Goalie Colin Faherty made a handful of amazing saves late (including a hard shot off his leg that he shrugged off and continued playing) to keep Ridgefield from scoring before middie Brady Corry cleared the ball from the midfield, dodged through traffic, and scored off a backhanded shovel shot off his knees with five seconds left to give Wilton the championship.
