To the Editors:
Even though it’s Christmastime, the recent actions of our bone spur, draft dodger President with no integrity have forced me to write this letter. I feel because of our current President we have gone from Ronald Reagan’s “shining city upon the hill” to Trump’s ”black hole in the swamp.” It appears that the only individuals willing to work in the current administration are those with the same lack of integrity as Donald Trump. Many have either been convicted of crimes, been indicted or are being investigated.
The most recent Twitter diplomacy statements pertaining to Syria were even too much for Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis who chose to resign rather than continue under Trump. The first paragraph of his resignation letter shows why: “I have been privileged to serve as our country’s 26th Secretary of Defense which has allowed me to serve alongside our men and women of the Department in defense of our citizens and our ideals.” You will notice that he believed in the importance in serving our country, not serving Trump. You can read the entire letter at time.com/5486300/james-mattis-disagree-donald-trump.
Mattis believed that actions taken by Trump would severely damage our country and our relationships with our longtime allies. Conversely, Trump did get kudos from Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey.
Other presidents have striven to do what is best for our country. In his inaugural address, John F. Kennedy spoke his famous words, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” It’s obvious that Trump could never understand that statement.
It’s time for all citizens, Republicans, Democrats or unaffiliated to stand up and make their voices heard. We’ve had enough damage to our democracy, our worldwide image and even our security. We must take action before it gets even worse.
