Little League: Eight-run rally keeps Wilton’s district hopes alive

The Wilton Little League 12U baseball all-stars are one of only three teams left standing in the District 1 tournament, after rallying for an 11-3 win over Stamford American on Tuesday night in Stamford.

Wilton plays Stamford National tonight in the losers’ bracket finals at Stamford Springdale Field (7).

The winner advances to play Weston in the district finals on Friday night at 7, also at Springdale. A second game, if needed, will be on Saturday night at 7.

On Tuesday, the Wilton all-stars trailed Stamford American 3-1 going to the top of the fifth, when they sent 14 batters to the plate and scored eight runs to go up 9-3. They added two more in the sixth to make it 11-3.

It was the second game in a row that Wilton staved off elimination, after losing its first elimination-round game to Stamford National last week, 4-0. On Saturday, they held off Stamford North, 4-3, to stay alive.

Justin Lewis got the win on Tuesday, going five and one-third innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks. He struck out nine. Max Jarvie got the save, pitching the final two-thirds of an inning and allowing only a hit.

Gavin Lowne (2-for-3, two runs) and Lewis (2-for-3, walk, RBI, run) each had two hits to lead the offense.

Getting one hit each were Jackson Carbonier (1-for-1, walk, two RBIs, run), Mike Fischetti (1-for-2, double, two walks, RBI, run), Jarvie (1-for-2, walk, RBI, run), Nick Forgione (1-for-1, double, two RBIs, run) and Nick Tournas (1-for-3, two RBIs, run). Jackson Duncan, Charlie Caporrino and Jason Sherrick each had a walk.

Stamford took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second, and went up 3-1 with a run in the third. Wilton scored in the top of the third when Jarvie’s sacrifice fly scored Cole Silvia, who had reached an error.

Wilton was retired in order in the fourth, and its first batter grounded out to open the fifth.

But then the fireworks began, as the next nine Wilton batters all got on base.

Caporrino walked and scored after an error on Silvia’s grounder to short, and Fischetti’s double brought Silvia home to tie the game at 3-3. After a walk to Jarvie, Forgione’s two-run double to right field plated Fischetti and Jarvie to put Wilton up 5-3.

Fischetti advanced to third on a single by Lowne and stole home to make it 6-3. Lewis walked and Tournas followed with an RBI single to score Lowne. After a walk by Sherrick loaded the based, Caporrino’s two-run single scored Lewis and Tournas to put Wilton up 9-3.

In the sixth, Duncan walked and scored on an RBI single by Lewis, and Lowne, who had saingled, scored on a sac fly by Tournas.

After giving up Stamford’s third run in the third inning, Lewis retired eight of the next nine batters, until a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth brought in Jarvie, who allowed a two-out single but got the final batter on a strikeout.
