Skiing: Wilton boys finish unbeaten in Class S, girls team third

The Wilton High skiing teams closed out the regular season on Monday at Mt. Southington, with the Wilton boys capturing the Class S regular-season title.

Both the boys and girls teams are competing in the Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League state championships today at Mt. Southington.

The Wilton boys were second overall out of 14 teams on the hill at Mt. Southington on Monday. The Warriors were undefeated in head-to-head competition, going 6-0, to finish the season 25-1 overall and 13-0 in Class S.

The highlight for Wilton was beating archrival Ridgefield by .85 of a second.

“Through the ruts and the slush our boys were able to sweep the night and best our long-time rival Ridgefield. After an undefeated season in our conference, we look forward to our states race,” said boys coach Mike Kaulins. “The energy and the spirits are high. We’re looking forward to another strong showing.”

Wilton had five of the top 19 finishers, out of a field of 108 varsity racers.

Ryan Van Heyst finished fifth overall to lead Wilton. Christian Theoharides was 12th, followed by Patrick Verrilli (15th), Michael Hueglin (16th), Phil Klinga (19th) and Matt Arrix (33rd).

The Warriors had a team time of 275.4 to edge out Ridgefield (276.25) and also beat Greenwich (279.74), Amity (303.56), Hopkins (305.78), Westhill (DSQ) and Litchfield (DSQ).

Wilton girls third

The Wilton girls were third out of 12 teams on the hill, and were 4-2 in head-to-head competition.

The Warriors finished the regular season 13-8 overall and 8-2 in Class S, placing third in the division to win the bronze medal.

Kira Howard was third in the overall standings, out of 88 varsity skiers. Julia Bonnist was 12th, followed by Katie Reid (15th), Hope Ullman (19th), Emily O’Brien (23rd), Alex Magnasson (37th), Emily Welch (39th), Megan Kaeyer (48th) and Chloe Elias (56th).

Wilton had a team time of 308.04 to beat Amity (325.45), Hopkins (354.67), Westhill (DSQ) and Litchfield (DSQ),but came up .32 of a second short against Ridgefield (307.72) and also lost to Greenwich (305.44).

“The Wilton girls ski team had a very strong showing for their final regular-season race. I was very happy to see that at Monday’s race several skiers skied to their individual highest place finish of the season,” commented girls coach Bill Howard. “The team improved considerably from last year and throughout this season.”
