The Wilton High wrestling team had another strong showing at an in-season tournament, this time at Saturday’s New Milford Tournament.
The Warriors placed fourth out of 21 teams, just half a point out of third place, and had three finalists and five place winners. All were program bests for the tournament.
Travis Longo, Nick Rende and Zach Zeyher all reached the finals and finished second, while Finn McGovern placed third and Trey Harris took fourth.
At 106 pounds, Longo reached the final with two pins. But he forfeited the championship match to Ty Finn of Simsbury, in what would have been a showdown between the two top-ranked wrestlers in the state in that weight bracket.
Rende, at 126 pounds, had two wins (including a pin) on his way to the finals, where he lost a tough 5-4 decision to Mel Ortiz of New Milford, the top-ranked wrestler in the state at 126.
At 170 pounds, Zeyher also had two pins to reach the championship, where he lost an 11-7 decision to Ryan Devivo of Xavier, the number-two ranked wrestler in the state at 170.
McGovern, at 120 pounds, bounced back from a 6-3 loss in his first match to win three straight wrestleback matches, including an 8-2 decision over Everret Nash of Fairfield Ludlowe in the third-place bout.
Harris, a freshman, made it to the third-place match at 132 pounds thanks to a pair of pins in the wrestlebacks, before losing in the consolation finals to Breon Pfifer of Weston. He had three pins on the day.
At 182 pounds Jacob Robb finished the day 2-2, including a pin in just 19 seconds in his opening match. Ethan Helman, wresting at 195 pounds, finished 1-2.
