The Wilton High boys golf team traveled to Oak Hills Golf Course and contested the Norwalk Bears in a FCIAC nine-hole golf match on Wednesday.
The Warriors produced a much-needed initial win in besting their Norwalk counterparts by 21 strokes, 173 to 194.
Well-balanced scoring brought the victory following two losses earlier in the week.
Devin Filaski and Robert Hickey returned twin 42 stroke cards to pave the way.
Filaski’s round featured a birdie 4 on the 484-yard par 5 eighth hole. His second, a flushed 7 iron from 187 yards out, nestled 10 feet from the flagstick — and only inches prevented an eagle result.
The team’s captain, senior Matt Greeff, recorded a 44 and Jack Cromwell closed out the team total shooting 45.
Equaling the Warriors’ low tandem, Norwalk junior Ryan Byrne also carded 42 on ‘The Hills’.
Wilton began the season by facing two of the FCIAC’s perennial strong teams, Staples and Darien, at Rolling Hills Country Club earlier this week.
In both tests the visitors prevailed, with Staples winning, 172-179, on Monday and Darien coming out on top, 163-176, on Tuesday.
Filaski led the Warriors in each contest, shooting a 40 against Staples to win medalist honors, and bettering that by one stroke on Tuesday against the Blue Wave of Darien.
The relationship of those numbers was a reflection on Filaski’s birdie report. He birdied the par 4, 328-yard 12th hole against Staples, and both the 10th (par 5, 465 yards) and the 14th (par 4, 373 yards).
Freshman Drew Saumier followed Filaski closely in the Staples match, returning a 43-stroke card that included his birdie on the par 4, 316-yard 16th hole.
Against Staples, third and fourth scores were reported by Jack Cromwell, 47, and Robert Hickey, a second freshman, who shot 49.
In the Darien encounter, Hickey returned a five-stroke improvement with a round of 44 (including a birdie). Cromwell scored 45 and Saumier reported 48.
