Editorial: Charitable children

The amount of good, charitable works that goes on here is always striking. There are countless people and organizations constantly raising and donating money for the good of others.

Children and young people often stand out in the charitable activity.

Just before Thanksgiving, several daughters of Wilton Woman’s Club members assisted the club’s generous venture of shopping for, preparing and delivering Thanksgiving dinners with all the trimmings to more than 40 homebound residents. What a great gesture for the holiday devoted to family and sharing the fruits of one’s bounty.

Fairfield County Habitat for Humanity has built its 200th home. Local youth have raised the funds toward four of these homes through the Youth United program, which has a chapter in Wilton.

This past week Wilton students created gingerbread homes for display at the Wilton YMCA, as a reminder of the need for local housing. They will sell the homes as centerpieces on Saturday, Dec. 19, outside Stop & Shop.

Wilton High School cheerleaders have presented more than $330 in donations to Norwalk Hospital’s Smilow Family Breast Health Center. The cheerleaders collected the donations during the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) at home football games.

Children also help spread holiday cheer at this time of year by taking the time to visit (and entertain) residents at assisted living facilities and nursing homes, like the young Y gymnasts who dropped by The Greens at Cannondale last Saturday.

Children of all ages are among the good deed doers because they are being taught by their parents and others to be that way. Being of service to others, especially those less fortunate, is virtuous, honorable and good.

Congratulations to the children making the appeals and doing the work, and congratulations to the parents and other adults in the community for showing them the way.
