Sylvia Betty Barker Occhuizzo passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 21, 2013 from complications of Alzheimer’s at the age of 85.
A woman with an amazing sense of humor and a quick wit, Sylvia was born on October 9, 1927 in Cleethorpes, England. During WWII she worked in a brewery where she met a G.I., John Occhuizzo, who was coming in for supplies for the PX. After much persistence on John’s part, they were married and at age 17 Sylvia was a war bride. In 1946 she was on her way to the Bronx, New York.
After a number of years, they moved to Stamford, Connecticut and eventually to Ridgefield. In the 1960’s she held the position of Executive Secretary to the President of Pitney Bowes and for 23 years she worked for Kerschner Construction Company in Norwalk, Connecticut retiring in 1991.
An avid reader, she was constantly reading at least three books at a time. She loved to bake; making the most amazing pies. An avid gardener, her perennial gardens rivaled those in England. Once she retired, she enjoyed relaxing on the deck overlooking the gardens and the views from Mallory Hill.
She loved traveling back to England to visit her brother and two sisters and the many nieces and nephews who lived there. But her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She loved spending many hours with Matt and Kate and, if not babysitting Brian and Eric, stopped by their house on a daily basis for a visit.
She was predeceased by her husband, John; a sister, Christine Smith and is survived by her son and wife, Chris and Anna Occhuizzo of Danbury, her daughter and husband, Lisa and Bill Scala of Ridgefield, CT; her grandchildren, Matt Occhuizzo of Brooklyn, New York, Kate Couch and her husband Chip of Austin, Texas, and Brian and Eric Scala of Ridgefield, CT. She will be greatly missed. A private memorial service will be held in Cleethorpes, England.
The Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield is in charge of arrangements.
