Danbury edges Wilton in FCIAC girls hoop semifinals

The Wilton High girls basketball team had its 17-game winning streak end with a 40-36 loss to reigning champ Danbury in an FCIAC semifinal contest Tuesday night in Fairfield.

Danbury, the fourth seed, will now meet second-seed Trumbull in the finals.

Trailing 38-36, top-seed Wilton (19-3) got a chance to tie the game or take the lead when Alyssa Malvarosa forced a jump ball that gave Wilton possession with 17.5 seconds to play. But Casey Pearsall had a shot blocked with 2.5 seconds left, and Danbury hit two free throws to end the scoring.

With the game tied 30-30 and 4:15 left in the final quarter, Danbury went on a 6-0 run to go ahead 36-30. Pearsall then hit a long three-pointer to bring the Warriors within two points, and, after the Hatters got a basket to ahead 38-33, Pearsall sank another long trey to make it 38-36.

Pearsall finished with 13 points to lead Wilton, which was ahead 18-17 at halftime. Erin Cunningham added 11 points and Malvarosa had six points.

The Warriors will now compete in the Class L state tournament.
