Girls basketball: Wilton gets big win over Trumbull

At stake for the Wilton High girls basketball team entering Friday’s night’s game against Trumbull was the Warriors’ 11-game winning streak, a chance to improve in the FCIAC overall standings, and the opportunity for a statement victory.

Check, check and check.

Wilton outscored Trumbull, 16-2, in the third quarter to surge past the Eagles, 43-31, for its 12th straight win. The Warriors are now 14-2 overall and third in the FCIAC standings with a 12-2 conference record, vaulting ahead of Trumbull (14-2, 12-2), which went from second overall in the FCIAC to fourth.

Things looked headed in the right direction early for the Warriors when Casey Pearsall took a pass from the wing and blew past two defenders for a layup and a 4-0 lead. Wilton had a 6-0 lead before Trumbull scored its first points from the line with 2:20 to play in the first quarter.

Action was limited in the first half, as each team had cold shooting streaks and both played tough defense. Wilton took a 19-18 lead into halftime after Alyssa Malvarosa worked hard down low and put in a bucket off the glass.

The Warriors also went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the first half.

Wilton head coach Jaclyn Porco made some lineup changes in the third quarter that paid big dividends as her team opened the second half with an 8-0 run. Sophomore Cory Cannavino came off the bench and hit three consecutive baskets to extend the lead and spark her team to a 35-20 advantage at the end of three.

Trumbull opened the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to cut into the home team’s lead, but the Warriors went into a freeze on offense midway through the period to seal the victory.

Pearsall led the balanced Warrior scoring with 10 points. Malvarosa and Erin Cunningham added eight points each, Haley English had seven points, and Cannavino finished with six points.

Erin Moore led Trumbull with 11 points.
