Copper thefts persist

A Westport Road resident reported the theft of three copper downspouts, valued cumulatively at about $450, from his property on Jan. 17. The theft likely occurred overnight, police said.

This follows several other instances of copper downspout thefts in Wilton and surrounding areas over the past few months.

According to police, two sections of copper downspouts, between eight and 10 feet each, were reported stolen from the front of a Grumman Hill Road home, most likely between Dec. 1 and 5; there were two other thefts on Dec. 5, one on Grumman Hill Road and one on East Meadow Road. About 25 feet of copper downspouts was taken from a West Meadow Road home on Dec. 6.

Police released a photo of a suspect, taken from a home video surveillance system, which may be seen at wiltonbulletin.com. They are asking anyone with any information to call 203-834-6260.

In a possibly related incident, three spools of copper wire, cumulatively valued at about $1,800, were reported stolen from the CL&P office building on Danbury Road at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 11.

Eighteen electrical spools and five structural spools of copper — worth $17,000 — were stolen from the Wilton Commons construction site on Route 7 on Jan. 3.
